Applications are invited for a highly motivated PDRA to lead on a UK Regenerative Medicine Platform (UKRMP)-funded project entitled ‘Manipulating the peripheral nerves of the niche to improve epithelial regeneration of the salivary gland’. Radiotherapy is a life-saving treatment for those with cancer, and the majority of patients with head and neck cancer will receive radiotherapy. Although this treatment is largely successful in treating the cancer, a severe side-effect is damage to healthy tissue. The salivary glands are often irradiated with the tumour, destroying the cells that produce saliva. This leads to chronic dry mouth and a multitude of oral problems, including difficulty eating and speaking and severely reduces patient quality of life. Current treatments focus only on short-term relief from the symptoms (e.g. sipping water). The Emmerson group are aiming to develop a regenerative strategy to restore salivary function, through the use of exogenous stem cell transplantation and endogenous stem cell reactivation by neuronal signalling. The post holder will be based at the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) a state of the art facility conducting research related to translation of research for patient benefit.
