CRM researchers are involved in a multi-disciplinary partnership Novosang that is working to create a supply of red blood cells using pluripotent stem cells. Such a new source of red blood cells would reduce the reliance of blood transfusion services on donated blood, filling the forecast global deficit between donated and the demand for transfused red cells.
Generating red blood cells make in this way would also solve the continuing problem where recipients are at risk of being infected with pathogens from cells derived from blood donors.
This multidisciplinary project involves partners with expertise in stem cell biology, haematology, biological engineering, bioprocessing and clinical regulation.
Within the Novosang project CRM researchers are involved in the generation of tools to manipulate the genome of human pluripotent stem cells to enhance differentiation protocol by transcription factor programming and the generation of reporter cell lines to monitor and optimize the process.
